From me, my Dear, O seek not to receive
\nWhat e’en deep-read Experience cannot give.
\nWe may, indeed, from the Physician’s skill
\nSome Med’cine find to cure the body’s ill.
\nBut who e’er found the physic for the soul,
\nOr made th’ affections bend to his controul?
\nWhen thro’ the blaze of passion objects show
\nHow dark ‘s the shade! how bright the colours glow!
\nAll the rous’d soul with transport’s overcome,
\nAnd the mind’s surly Monitor is dumb.<\/p>\n

In vain the sages turn their volumes o’er,
\nAnd on the musty page incessant pore,
\nStill mighty Love triumphant rules the heart,
\nBaffles their labour, and eludes their art.<\/p>\n

Say what is science, what is reason’s force
\nTo stop the passions wild ungovern’d course?
\nReason, ’tis true, may point the rocky shore,
\nAnd shew the danger, but can serve no more,
\nFrom wave to wave the wretched wreck is tost,
\nAnd reason ‘s in th’ impetuous torrent lost.<\/p>\n

In vain we strive, when urg’d by cold neglect,
\nBy various means our freedom to effect,
\nTho’ like the bee from sweet to sweet we rove,
\nAnd search for ease in the vast sound of Love,
\nTho’ in each Nymph we meet a kind return,
\nStill in the firstfond hopeless flame we burn,
\nThat dear idea still our thoughts employs,
\nAnd blest variety itself e’en cloys.
\nSo exiles banish’d from their native home
\nAre met with pity wheresoe’er they come,
\nYet still their native soil employs their care,
\nAnd death were ease to lay their ashes there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
